Keeping Memories Alive

Chernobyl 2015

A much anticipated trip to the 1986 disaster zone....
Late June 2015, I ventured to Chernobyl for a 2 day tour with Chernobylwel.com. A brilliant and professional tour group! 110% recommended!

Well what can I say, we covered so much ground! The sights in and around Prypiat were AMAZING! A huge thank you to the guides, Misha and Tanya (you guys were super!).
I will return again in the future to see more!

The Chernobyl power plant was at the time one of the largest in the world; Reactor 4 was commissioned in 1983. Little did they know that 3 years later the reactor would change countless lives for years to come.
The accident occurred on April 26, 1986 at 1:24 AM local time. It was the largest nuclear energy disaster in history.
The explosion took place in the fourth reactor of the power plant which is located only 75 miles from Kiev, the capital of Ukraine! Not very far in nuclear disaster terms...
The accident occurred during a scheduled experiment to test the safety emergency core cooling feature, a procedure that would condem the reactor and everyone else’s fate to time..

Below are a few of my favourite photos from the trip. There is also a slideshow to music at the bottom.

I hope you can appreciate and understand the magnitude of this disaster, it is a brilliant place for a photographer to explore and experience.
At no point have I forgotten what suffering and pain was caused from that fateful night in April 1986...
